Axar Patel and R Ashwin yet again blunted the English batsman and help their team finished at the top at the end of today’s play. England was bowled out for 205 runs despite playing eight batsmen in the playing XI.
IND vs ENG 4th test: Summary of Day one
England’s captain Joe Root won the toss and chose to bat first on the pitch that looked more batting-friendly than the previous test. England team goes with 8 batsmen by adding Dan Lawrence, and Dom Bess in place of Stuart Broad, and Jofra Archer. India made one change. Mohammed Siraj comes in place of Jasprit Bumrah who had to withdraw his name from the IND vs. ENG 4th Test match due to personal reasons.
The Visitor did not get a good start as their opener Dom Sibley fell on the first over of Axar Patel’s spell. Dom played straight ball for the turn and completely plays down the wrong line. The ball hit the stump as Axar got his first wicket of IND vs ENG 4th Test match. In the very next over of his spell, Axar got the wicket of 2nd opener in the form of Zak Crawley. Mohammed Siraj who was playing in place of Jasprit Bumrah gave India the big wicket of England captain Joe Root. Mohammed Siraj first set up Root for the outswing ball and after few balls, he inswing the ball that hit Root’s pad plumb.
After that Ben Stokes and Bairstow ensured that no more wicket fell in the morning session of day one of IND vs ENG 4th Test. Mohammed Siraj broke the partnership as he dismissed Bairstow on 28. Siraj got the wicket of Bairstow with seaming in delivery. India dragged back things as they removed Ben Stokes, just before the Tea. Ben Stokes was dismissed after scoring his fifty and was looking the most comfortable batsman among English players. Sundar slides the ball into the Stokes. But, Ben Stokes played for the turn, and the ball hit his pad.
In the Final session, Daniel Lawrence and Ollie Pope added 45 runs before Pope got out in a very unfortunate way. Pope steps down the pitch to play the flighted off-break bowled by Ashwin towards on-side and the ball took the inside edge and hits his leg and deflected straight to short leg. Shubman Gill took the simple catch. The fell of this wicket opens up the lower order of England’s batting. Ashwin got his 2nd wicket as he dismissed Ben Foakes on regular off-spinner delivery.
Lawrence who played with an aggressive approach throughout the inning got out while playing a big shot on the Axar Patel bowl. Lawrence scored 46 runs. England finally bowled out for 205 runs. England team goes past 200 runs for the first time in the series since the first inning of the 1st Test. Axar picked four wickets. While Ashwin, Sundar, and Siraj got 3, 1, and 2 wickets respectively.
India did not get the ideal start as they lost Shubman Gill in the very first over of India’s inning. Gill got out without troubling the scorers. James Anderson swings the ball in and Gill completely missed the ball as he tried to play a flick on this delivery. The ball thrashed into the pads. India finished its day on 24/1 with Rohit Sharma(8) and Pujara(15) are at the crease. (source)
