India vs England 2021: Virat Kohli Equals Dhoni’s Record

India has strongly bounced back in India vs England 2021 Test Series by winning the 2nd Test match with a massive margin of 317 runs against England in Chennai. England had lost all their ten wickets to spin while chasing a target of 482 runs in the fourth inning on a deteriorating pitch. India level the series 1-1. The next match of the India vs. England 2021 Test Series is a day-night match and will start from February 24 at the Motera stadium in Ahmedabad.

India vs England 2021: Virat Equals Unique Record of Dhoni

From the Chennai win on Tuesday, Virat Kohli has become the most successful Indian Test Captain jointly with MS Dhoni at home. Both Dhoni and Virat Kohli have won 21 Test matches as captains in India. Virat has a win percentage of 77.8 in 28 Test matches at home. While MS Dhoni has a win percentage of 70 in India. Dhoni had lost three test matches and drew six at home. While Virat Kohli has lost two test matches in India. The First loss of Kohli as captain came in 2017 against Australia in Pune and the second came in the 1st Test match of India vs England 2021 Test series.

With this massive win, Virat Kohli ends the captaincy debate for a while. In the Previous series, Ajinkya Rahane took the captaincy responsibility after the Adelaide defeat as Kohli departed on paternity leave. India won the historic test series in Australia under Ajinkya captaincy. Following 227 runs defeat in 1st Test against England, there was discussion about Virat should step down from captaincy in Test. Today’s win in Chennai has settled Virat’s captaincy debate.

Axal Patel who made his Test debut has claimed a five-wicket haul in the 2nd Inning against England. Axar also dismissed England’s captain Joe Root in both innings. Here are some stats from Axar’s Fifer

  1. With the figures of 5/60, Axar Patel became the third Indian debutant to take a five-wicket haul in Chennai. Apart from Axar Patel, Narendra Hirwani and Dilip Doshi had taken fifer on debut in Chennai. Dilip Doshi claimed a figure of 6/103 against Australia in 1979. While Narendra Hirwani who had one of the most famous Test debuts took 8 for 61 in 1st inning and 8 for 75 against the West Indies in 1988.
  2. Axar Patel with his five-wicket haul in the 2nd Inning became the 9th Indian to claim a fifer on Test debut and also became the sixth Indian spinner to took a five-wicket haul.

World Test Championship Scenario

India vs England 2021 Test series becomes more crucial in terms of the World Test Championship. New Zealand had already cemented their place in WTC’s final. India can make their place in WTC’s final if India wins the Test series (2-1 or 3-1). While England can qualify if England wins the series (3-1). Australia can make their way if England wins the series(2-1). If the series draw, then Australia will qualify for the final at Lords.

Dan Lawrence and Joe Root resumed the chase. R Ashwin once again gave his side the first breakthrough of the day on his first ball. Dan Lawrence who was playing the spinner using his feet took the big lunge forward. Ashwin saw him coming and bowl a quicker bowl down the leg to Dan Lawrence. Dan missed and Pant collects the ball and stumps Dan Lawrence. After that Joe Root along with senior man, Ben Stokes continued to dish out the challenges.

Ashwin once again stalled Ben Stokes before beaten the edge of Stokes’s bat on several occasions. Ben Stokes moved outside off in anticipation that the ball will turn. However, Ashwin slides the ball towards the leg this time and got the thick edge of Stokes’s bat. Virat Kohli who was standing in slips took the catch. A few overs later, Axar Patel dismissed Ollie Pope for 12. Pope tried to play sweep shot and got top-edge on a slow delivery bowled by Axar. Ishant took the catch.

Sweep Shot brought the downfall of another England Batsmen as Ben Foakes fall just before the Lunch. Ben Foakes played a sweep to full bowl bowled by Kuldeep Yadav and the top edge ball carried to Axar Patel who was fielding at mid-wicket. Joe Root battled hard at one end. England was 116 for 7 at Lunch.

In the post-lunch session, debutant Axar Patel got the big wicket in the form of Joe Root. This was an Absolute snorter! Nothing Joe Root could do to get away from the delivery. Axar bowled the ball just outside off stump and Joe pressed hard and present a simple catch to slip. Axar got his maiden fifer as he plumbed Stone in front. Moeen Ali played some big shots. With the fall of Moeen Ali’s wicket, England’s sub-continental winning march comes to an end. Moeen Ali is out for 43 runs off 18 balls. England bowled out for 164 in their second inning. (source)
