The Role of the Batsman changed over the years as the Cricket format evolved. In the early days of this sport, only test cricket was played and every coach used to tell that play with proper cricketing shots, not with orthodox shots. When One day International Cricket arrived, batsmen started to take risks in the last few overs of the inning. Now, in the T20s, every team needs a few specialist batsmen who can change the game single handily with their batting in death overs. It is very hard to pick the best finisher in IPL history. A batsman who was batting at death overs needs to take things like how many numbers of overs are left, how many wickets are left, which bowler to target etc. into his account.

Who is the best finisher in IPL history?

The list of IPL’s best finishers is prepared while considering factors like their stats in death overs, and their contribution to winning the match.

1. AB de Villiers

AB de Villiers is the best finisher in the Indian Premier League with a staggering strike rate of 233.1 in death overs. He has racked up 1254 runs with an average of 39.2 in 67 innings in death overs. He has smashed 235 sixes in his IPL career and on 2nd spot on the list of maximum sixes hit by a batsman in IPL after Chris Gayle. ABD is number 1 in terms of the highest strike rate with a minimum of 150 IPL innings. He is in the 10th spot in the overall highest strike rate in IPL with a strike rate of 151.91.

2. MS Dhoni

Although in recent years, his effectiveness has diminished. However, MS Dhoni remains one of the best finishers in IPL history. MS Dhoni has won many memorable matches for his IPL team. One of the famous victories came in 2010 when CSK needed 16 runs in the last over to qualify for the playoffs. Dhoni smashed one four and two sixes to seal the victory for Chennai. Another incident was when Dhoni scored 23 runs in the last over to win the match in 2017.

In his 131 innings in death overs, Dhoni has smashed 2303 runs with a strike rate of 189.1. He is on 3rd on the list of maximum sixes with 219 sixes.

3. Kieron Pollard

For Mumbai Indians, Kieron Pollard is evolved as the IPL’s best finisher. He played an important part in lifting the IPL trophy 5 times. Kieron Pollard along with Hardik and Krunal, Mumbai Indians have one of the most dangerous lower-middle orders in IPL. Kieron Pollard has scored 1487 runs with a strike rate of 185.4 in 100 innings in death overs. Pollard with 214 sixes, is on 5th on the list of maximum sixes in IPL.

4. Andre Russell

In recent years, Andre Russell has evolved himself as one of the destructive batsmen in the shorter format. Andre Russell has the capability to become the best finisher in IPL history in upcoming years. In death overs, Russell has scored 665 runs with a strike rate of 218 in 38 innings. His six-hitting ability make his way into this list.

5. Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya who is currently India’s number 1 finisher at this moment, is going strength to strength in becoming the best finisher in the Indian Premier League. Hardik might not look like a muscular man by physic. However, he is one of the cleanest strikers in Cricket. He played 55 innings in death over and scored 836 runs with a strike rate of 192.2. He is now an integral part of MI’s middle-lower with Kieron Pollard. He could become the best finisher in IPL history in the next few years.
